Obrad Jovanović's comments on the Užice exhibition held at ART Gallery in January 2004 on occasion of the 15th anniversary of artistic work

This Mirko Sekulić exhibition is an outstanding example of how a man's need to express himself and the pleasure taken in the act of painting is worthy of being shared with others. His paintings do not pretend to convey an extreme wisdom or the feeling of the aimlessness or the desperation of facing the nothingness, they are a mere embodiment of simple human experiences and an attempt at generalising the personal experience and relating it to a wider public. The wider public includes me and you, the visitors to the exhibition.

Mirko's work does not have high pretentions at the level of the high-brow structures and imaginary worlds of surrealism or informel. Instead, he enjoys the unpolluted nature, the transformations of the landscape brought about by the advent of seasons, and the joy of decoding the essence of the transformations through artistic work. Within the landscapes, he finds his motifs and a prevailing atmosphere is one of mildness, characterised by the softness of the perspective, of melancholy and longing for the unreachable, which only emphasises the impression of the space and the physical beauty of the landscape. Because of this the beauty of the landscape surrounging his birthplace can boast another poet who collaborates with the wind, the birds, the thunder and the reflection of the eternal skies in the rapids of mountain streams and the general transience.

Professor Obrad Jovanović

An impressionist when it comes to the treatment of colours, and a temperate expressionist when it comes to the strokes and moves, applying a calculated and reasoned use of colours, making full use of their expressive and chromatic values... True human experience The exhibition of works by Mirko Sekulic, artist from Uzice, was opened at the cinema lobby, on January 12, as a commemoration of the 15th anniversary of artistic work. 32 landscapes, using the techniques of pastel, oil on canvas, and water colour miniatures.

Professor Obrad Jovanovic stated that this exhibition is a great example of the human need to explore and enjoy the act of painting and getting a result which is worthy of being shared with others. According to the critics, Sekulic is an impressionist when it comes to his treatment of colours, and a moderate expressionist when it comes to his gesture and strokes. He deals with the motifs with a calculated, reason-driven use of colours, their expressive and luminous evaluation and deliberation. A certain smoothness and softness of perspective leaves an impression of melancholy and longing for the unreachable, which only amplifies the illusion of space and a fascination with the critical. That is how the birthplace influences a poet who allies with the wind, the birds, the thunder and the reflection of the eternal sky in the rapids of mountain streams and universal transience.
